Winter Garden Storage: Our Heavy-Duty Log Store and Wooden Bin Store

A log store that actually seasons your firewood, and a wheelie bin store built like a garden building. Both handmade to order in our Derbyshire workshop.

When the stove goes on for the winter, the garden changes job. It stops being somewhere to sit and becomes somewhere to fetch logs from, wheel the bins out to and take in the deliveries. So alongside our planters and garden tables, we make two pieces of garden storage that earn their keep in the colder months: a heavy-duty log store and a wooden wheelie bin store.

We build both the way we build our garden furniture: a proper frame, heavy-duty fittings and nothing that flexes when you lean on it. Here's what goes into each one, and how to choose.

The Heavy-Duty Log Store

A log store should outlast the logs you put in it, by decades. Ours is built on a solid, braced timber frame with overlap cladding, in tanalised pressure-treated timber throughout, so there's no annual treatment to remember. It comes with our 15 Year Warranty.

Why airflow matters more than a sealed box

Wet wood is the enemy of a good fire. It smokes, it spits, it gives off far less heat, and it coats your flue with tar. Dry logs burn hotter and cleaner. In England, wood sold in amounts under 2 cubic metres has to be certified Ready to Burn, which means 20% moisture or less. Buy a bigger load and it can arrive wet, with a note telling you how to dry it. Either way, where you keep it decides how well it burns.

The answer isn't to seal logs away. It's to keep the rain off while letting the air through, because airflow, not airtightness, is what seasons firewood. Everything about our log store is designed around that:

  • Raised slatted floor. Lifts the stack off the wet ground and lets air rise up through it.
  • Sloping roof, slatted or slate-tiled. The roof slopes down to the front and overhangs, so rain runs off clear of the stack. Our standard slatted timber roof also ventilates the stack from above, or you can choose a slate-tiled roof in grey fibre cement slates for £50 more.
  • Overlap-clad sides. Shelter the logs from driven rain without shutting the air out.
  • Braced timber frame. Stays rigid when it's full, year after year.

Three sizes

All three share the same depth and height (850mm deep, 1500mm high), so they line up as a matching pair or trio if you burn a lot.

  • Small, 750mm wide: tucks neatly beside a back door for everyday burning. From £495.
  • Medium, 1150mm wide: holds about 0.65m³ of stacked logs, around one full bulk bag. From £595.
  • Large, 1500mm wide: holds about 0.89m³, around a bulk bag and a quarter. From £695.

Need a different width to fit your space? We build to order, so get in touch and we'll make it to measure.

A word about “flat-packed”

You can have your log store fully assembled, ready to fill the day it arrives (£55 more), or flat-packed. But our flat-pack isn't a lightweight panel kit. It's the same heavy-duty, framed log store, cut and pre-drilled in our workshop, and sent with all the fixings and plain-English instructions. It takes around an hour with a drill. You're not building a flimsy box, you're bolting together a proper one.

Every log store is made to order and dispatched in 3-4 working days, with free 2-man delivery to the UK mainland.

Getting the most from your log store

  • Put it where the wind and sun can reach it. A breezy spot dries logs faster than a sheltered corner.
  • Stack loosely, cut ends facing out. Gaps let the air do its job.
  • Burn the oldest logs first. Fill from one side and take from the other.
  • Think a season ahead. Logs bought in spring and stored over summer will be at their best by winter.

The Wooden Wheelie Bin Store

Wheelie bins are one of those things nobody wants to look at, and they're usually the first thing you see on the way to the front door. Our bin store hides them behind something you'll actually be pleased to look at, with the kind of ironmongery you'd expect on a garden building rather than a flat-pack box.

  • Gas-strut lids. They lift with one hand and stay where you put them, so you're not holding a lid open with your head while you empty the kitchen bin.
  • Slate-tiled roof as standard. Sheds the rain and looks the part against brick or stone.
  • Heavy-duty ironmongery throughout, not the light hardware used on flat-pack stores.
  • Corner door stops. Keep the doors aligned and stop them twisting or sagging over the years.
  • Flat support strips inside for stable, easy bin access.
  • Rounded, smooth-finished timber. No sharp edges or splinters.

One to four bins, and a bay for logs or parcels

Choose one, two, three or four bays. Each store is 910mm deep and 1390mm high at the back, sloping to 1230mm at the front.

  • 1 bin: 780mm wide, £625
  • 2 bins: 1520mm wide, £1,195
  • 3 bins: 2260mm wide, £1,745
  • 4 bins: 3000mm wide, £2,275

You can add an extra bay for logs, parcels or recycling boxes for £300. It adds 740mm to the width, and it's a neat way to keep kindling dry by the door or give the delivery driver somewhere to leave a parcel in the run-up to Christmas.

Not a flat-pack

Your bin store arrives as a fully built carcass. Only the doors and lids travel separately, to protect them in transit, and they screw into pre-drilled holes so everything lines up first time. It takes two people around an hour, and we send video instructions before it arrives.

If you'd rather we did it, we can install within 150 miles of our workshop (DE4). Ask us for a quote. Installation adds around four weeks to the lead time. Whichever way you go, the store needs to sit on flat ground, otherwise the doors will need adjusting.

Delivery to the UK mainland is included in the price. Need a size we don't list for an awkward space? We make bespoke bin stores too, just ask.

Made in Derbyshire

Both are made to order by the same small team in our workshop at Tansley, near Matlock, alongside our planters, garden tables and new dining range. If you have a question about sizes, siting or delivery, call us on 01629 343350 (9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday) or WhatsApp James a photo of the space and we'll help you work it out.
