Solid Wood Dining Table with Metal X Legs

The Stanage is a solid wood dining table with metal legs: a 45mm Scandinavian redwood top on a pair of steel X-frame legs, made to order in our Derbyshire workshop. The X frame is set 160mm in from each end, so the top overhangs enough for someone to sit at the head, and there is no stretcher bar along the length — legroom is clear from one end to the other. Four sizes from a 150cm four-seater to a 240cm table for twelve, with one or two matching benches.

The steel does the structural work and the wood does the rest. Each X is welded from box-section steel — powder coated black or white, or clear-coated so the raw steel shows through — and bolts to the underside of the top, so the table arrives in two pieces, goes through a normal doorway, and is rigid once it is together. Lean on the end; it does not rock.

Timber and finish

The top is 45mm solid Scandinavian redwood — the pine most British joinery is made from — glued up from full-length boards, planed flat and sanded by hand. It is finished in hard wax oil rather than lacquer, so it feels like wood, wipes clean, and a scratch can be sanded out and re-oiled at the kitchen table rather than sent away. Three colours: Clear shows the pale, natural pine; Walnut finish takes it to a deep brown dark wood; Smoked Oak finish sits between the two, a medium oak colour.

Benches

Add one or two matching benches. Each bench is 10cm shorter than the table, 35cm deep and 45cm high, and finished in the same colour, so a 180cm table takes a 170cm bench that seats three comfortably. Benches tuck in under the overhang alongside the table when they are not in use.

Delivery

Made to order in our Derbyshire workshop, usually 3–4 weeks from order. Delivery is free to the UK mainland by a two-man team who carry it to the room you choose. It arrives with the legs detached and the top wrapped — safer in transit than a made-up table — and fitting them takes about ten minutes: the bolts supplied screw straight into threaded inserts in the underside of the top. We plant five trees for every table sold.

Questions we get asked

How many people does each size seat?

150cm seats four comfortably and six with a bench; 180cm six to eight; 210cm eight to ten; 240cm ten to twelve. Allow about 60cm of table edge per person.

Is the top solid wood?

Yes — 45mm solid Scandinavian redwood all the way through. No veneer, no board, no filler.

Do the benches slide under the table?

Part-way. The legs sit at the ends of the table, so a standard bench — 10cm shorter than the table — tucks in under the overhang rather than disappearing underneath; it takes up about 35cm alongside. If you would rather have benches that slide fully under between the legs, we will make them shorter at no extra cost (each seats one fewer person — the lengths for each size are in the Sizes & Seating tab). Just reply to your order confirmation with “I'd like the benches to slide underneath”, or call us on 01629 343350.

Is pine softer than oak?

Yes. Scandinavian redwood is a softwood, so a dropped pan or a heavy knock will leave a mark where oak might not — the trade-off is a 45mm solid top at well under the price of oak. Because the finish is hard wax oil, a mark can be sanded out and re-oiled at home. If you would rather have the same table with a solid oak or American black walnut top, configure it on our bespoke page — same sizes, your choice of legs, priced instantly.

Can I have a different size?

Yes. Anything from 100 to 300cm long and 60 to 120cm wide can be priced instantly on our bespoke dining table page, in redwood, solid oak or American black walnut.

Does it need assembling?

A little. The table arrives in pieces — the top, the legs and a bag of bolts — which keeps it safe in transit and gets it through any doorway and up any stairs. Our 2-man team carries everything to the room you choose; you then bolt the legs into the threaded inserts in the underside of the top. About ten minutes with an Allen key (not included) — no drilling.

How do I look after the finish?

Wipe with a damp cloth. Every year or two, rub in a little hard wax oil. Scratches and ring marks can be sanded locally and re-oiled — the finish repairs invisibly, which lacquer cannot.

What are the legs made of?

Box-section mild steel, welded into an X. Choose black or white powder coat, which is baked on and does not chip the way paint does, or a clear lacquer over the raw steel for the grey, workshop look in the photos. Want another colour? Ask — we can do any RAL.

Also made in solid oak and American black walnut — configure yours.

The top is 45mm solid Scandinavian redwood — the pine most British joinery is made from — glued up from full-length boards, planed flat and sanded by hand. Every table is made to order in our Derbyshire workshop.

Legs: powder-coated steel X-frame in black or white, or clear-coated raw steel, one at each end set 160mm in from the end of the top. Bolts to the underside; no stretcher bar.

Finish: hard wax oil rather than lacquer, so it feels like wood, wipes clean, and a scratch can be sanded out and re-oiled at home rather than sent away. Three colours — Clear shows the pale, natural pine; Walnut finish takes it to a deep brown dark wood; Smoked Oak finish sits between the two, a medium oak colour. Benches are finished to match.

Care: wipe with a damp cloth, use mats under hot pans, and re-oil the top once a year or so to keep it fresh. Solid wood moves a little with the seasons — that's normal and nothing to worry about.

Not sure on colour? Order the three finish samples — 10 x 10cm offcuts of the actual redwood, oiled in Clear, Walnut and Smoked Oak, £5 the set and refunded against your table.

Prefer oak or walnut? Pine is softer than oak, so it marks more easily (and sands out). We make the same table with a solid oak or American black walnut top — configure it on the bespoke page.

Allow about 60cm of table edge per person. Table height is 75cm; benches are 45cm high and 35cm deep, and sit 10cm shorter than the table so they tuck underneath when not in use.

Do the benches slide under? Most of the way. The legs sit at the ends of the table, so a standard bench (10cm shorter than the table) tucks in under the overhang rather than disappearing underneath — pushed in sideways it sits about 8cm proud of the table edge, with 71cm of clear height under the top. Want benches that slide right under, between the legs? We'll make them shorter at no extra cost — about 94cm on the 150cm table (seats 2), 124cm on the 180cm table (seats 2), 154cm on the 210cm table (seats 3), 184cm on the 240cm table (seats 3) — each one seat fewer than the standard bench, with 5cm of room either side of the legs. Just reply to your order confirmation with “I'd like the benches to slide underneath”, or call 01629 343350, and we'll make them that way. The legs are set 160mm in from each end of the top (230mm on the benches), so there's an end seat free of legs on every size. Need something between sizes, or longer? Configure your own — any length up to 300cm, priced instantly.

If none of the standard sizes is quite right, we make every table to order anyway — so we can just as easily make yours to the length, width and height you need, up to 300cm long. Same 45mm solid redwood top, same legs, same three finishes, same 15 year warranty.

Design your own table — pick the size, legs and finish and see the price instantly. Or ask James — WhatsApp a photo of your room, call 01629 343350 (9am–5.30pm, 7 days) or use the chat in the corner of the page, and we'll talk it through.

Every table is covered by our 15 Year Warranty against manufacturing faults, from the date of purchase. We make everything ourselves in Derbyshire — nothing is imported or outsourced — which is why we can stand behind it for so long.

  • Built to be repaired, not replaced. The hard wax oil finish can be sanded back and re-oiled at home, and we'll always help you look after your table for as long as you own it.
  • If something's wrong, call 01629 343350 or email us with a couple of photos and your order number. We'll repair or replace the affected part.
  • Covers domestic use by the original purchaser. Normal wear such as scratches, dents and marks, and the natural seasonal movement of solid wood, aren't faults and aren't covered. Full terms.

Made to order in our Derbyshire workshop, usually 3–4 weeks from order. Delivery is free to the UK mainland (excluding the Highlands and offshore islands) by our own 2-man team, who give you a 3-hour time slot with live on-the-day tracking and carry the table to the room you choose.

Will it fit? Your table arrives with the legs detached and the top fully wrapped — made up, a solid top this size is awkward through a doorway and more likely to get knocked in transit. On its edge the top goes through a standard 76cm door and up a normal staircase; the top weighs roughly 29–46kg depending on size (see Sizes & Seating), so it's a two-person lift. Fitting the legs takes about ten minutes: the bolts supplied screw straight into threaded inserts in the underside of the top. All you need is an Allen key (not included) — no drilling, no glue.

Returns: if you wish to return your table, contact us within 15 days of delivery. We'll arrange collection from the delivery address; because of the size and weight there is a collection charge for unwanted items that aren't faulty or damaged. Your refund is processed once the table is back with us and inspected. Full details on our Delivery and returns page.
