Finely fluted doors in crown-cut black walnut on black steel legs β€” a quiet, low sideboard made to order, by hand, in our Derbyshire workshop.

A low, quiet piece with a rhythm to it. The Monsal sideboard pairs fluted door fronts in crown-cut black walnut β€” a rounded, ribbed profile rather than a scalloped one β€” with black steel U-frame legs: a handmade walnut sideboard that reads as furniture, not filing.

Design

Four doors, each framed in walnut with a hand-finished fluted panel that catches the light differently as you move around the room β€” the detail that gives fluted furniture its quiet movement. The fluting is reeded rather than grooved: a run of soft half-round ribs in real walnut, laid up by hand. The overhanging top is cut from crown-cut walnut with the cathedral figure running its full length. Behind the doors: three open bays with shelves, sized for everything a living or dining room asks a sideboard to hide. The pared-back lines and natural timber sit as comfortably in a japandi or Scandi-inspired room as they do against period plaster and floorboards.

Made properly

  • Crown-cut American black walnut veneer over a precision-engineered core β€” the figure of real walnut with the stability that keeps doors true for decades
  • Hand-laid ribbed (reeded) walnut fluting on all four doors β€” solid rounded ribs, not a pattern routed into a board
  • Blum soft-close concealed hinges, adjustable in three axes
  • Powder-coated black steel U-frame legs
  • Made to order in our Derbyshire workshop β€” current lead time around 4 weeks

Why "Monsal"?

A few miles from our workshop, the River Wye cuts through Monsal Dale β€” one of the Peak District's most loved valleys. Stand at Monsal Head and you look down on the great stone arches of the Headstone Viaduct striding across the river, with the old Midland Railway line β€” now the Monsal Trail β€” running through the hillside behind it. It's a place of strong, simple lines set in soft countryside, which felt right for this piece. Every design in our range is named for a corner of the Derbyshire landscape we work in.

Every piece in the Derbyshire Range is built when you order it, by hand, in our workshop. That's how we keep the timber selection, the fluting and the finish to the standard you see in the photographs. Once your piece is finished we'll be in touch to book a two-man delivery slot that suits you.

Timber samples are available on request β€” ask via the form below and we'll post a piece of the actual fluted veneer so you can see the colour and grain in your own room.

Every piece in the Derbyshire Range can be adapted. Because we build each one to order, changing it is a conversation rather than a compromise.

  • Size β€” longer, shorter, shallower or taller to suit an alcove, a chimney breast or a particular wall
  • Timber β€” black walnut as shown, or oak; other veneers on request
  • Configuration β€” drawers in place of a bay, cable access for a TV or hi-fi, an open shelf, a matching TV unit or dresser
  • Legs & finish β€” alternative leg colours or a plinth base, satin or matt lacquer

Tell us what you have in mind using the form below, or ring the workshop on 01629 343350. We'll come back with a drawing and a price before anything is made. For a piece designed from scratch, see our bespoke furniture service.

The Derbyshire Range

Every piece in our furniture range is designed and made to order in Derbyshire, one at a time, and named for a corner of the landscape around our workshop β€” the dales, edges and villages of the Peak District. Crown-cut veneers chosen leaf by leaf, hand-finished fluting, Blum hardware and powder-coated steel: built to be the piece in the room that outlasts everything else in it.

Handmade in Derbyshire
Made by us, in our workshop

There's no factory behind the Derbyshire Range β€” just this team and this building, a few miles from Monsal Dale. Every sideboard is cut, veneered, fluted and finished here, by the people in this photograph, and it doesn't leave until we'd be happy to have it in our own homes.

Because each piece is made when you order it, we can talk about sizes, timbers and finishes before we start. Use the enquiry form above or ring the workshop.

From drawing to bench
Designed here too

Each design starts on the bench: sketches, a 3D model we refine until the proportions sit right, and timber samples laid side by side under daylight. The Monsal went through a dozen versions before the flute spacing, the overhang of the top and the stance of the steel legs settled into the piece you see here.

The renders on this page are built from that same 3D model, which is why what arrives looks like what you ordered.

The detail
Ribbed fluting, one slat at a time

The fluted panels are laid up by hand β€” a reeded profile of soft, rounded ribs rather than grooves cut into a board. Each rib is selected, spaced and set so the rhythm runs true across all four doors and the grain reads as one piece of timber. The frames are crown-cut veneer chosen for the cathedral figure; the tops carry it full length.

It's slower than machining a pattern into a board. It's also why the light moves across these doors the way it does.
