Lined, drained and ready to plant
Every planter is fully lined, with drainage built in, so wet compost never sits against the timber and surplus water has somewhere to go. It arrives assembled, with the castors already fitted if you ordered them, so there is nothing to build: stand it where you want it and fill it. Planters under 1.2m come by tracked courier; anything longer is delivered by our 2-man team and placed where you'd like it.
Colours and castors
The Modern trough, the Large Square and the Corner planter come in five colours: Natural, Medium Oak, Ironstone Grey, Sensual Soft White and Beach Hut Blue. The other designs come in their standard finish; if you'd like one in a colour, the planter builder makes any design in any of the five.
Castor wheels, galvanised steel with hard nylon wheels, are an option on every planter except the Corner and the Round. They add about 12cm to the height and let you move a full planter to follow the sun or clear a path. The price is shown on each product page.
How long will a wooden planter last?
Ours are built from pressure-treated timber, lined so the compost never touches the wood, and covered by our 15 Year Warranty. The finish will weather over the years like any exterior timber; when you want it back to new, our guide to restoring and re-staining a wooden planter takes you through it in an afternoon.
Filling and planting
Three guides from the workshop cover the questions we get asked most: how to fill and mulch a planter, how to keep it watered, from drainage to irrigation systems, and what to plant in autumn. The short version: don't stand a planter flat on a sealed surface, mulch the top, and water long rather than often.
Need a size we don't make?
Use the planter builder: pick a style, type in your length, width and height up to 2.5 metres, choose a colour and castors, and see the price straight away. Questions people ask
Do your planters arrive assembled?
Yes, every planter is delivered fully assembled and lined, with castors fitted if you ordered them. There is nothing to build.
Are they lined, and do they need drainage holes?
Every planter is fully lined with drainage built in. The liner keeps wet compost off the timber; the drainage lets surplus water out. Stand it on feet, battens or castors rather than flat on paving so the water can escape.
What goes in the bottom of a wooden planter?
A layer of crocks or gravel over the drainage, then compost, then a few centimetres of mulch on top to hold the moisture in. Our mulch guide explains why it makes such a difference.
How long will a wooden planter last?
Ours are pressure-treated, lined and covered by a 15 Year Warranty. The finish will weather; it can be re-stained in an afternoon with our restoring guide.
Can they stay outside all year?
Yes. They are made for British weather and stay out all year round.
What size planter do I need for a tree or shrub?
The Large Square holds 65 litres at 50 × 50cm and 48cm deep, which suits a small tree or a specimen shrub. For hedging or screening, the Tall planter gives 40cm of planting depth along up to 180cm. For anything bigger, design your own up to 2.5m.
Can I have a custom size or colour?
Yes. The planter builder makes the Modern, Mitred, Tall, Corner and Round designs to your measurements, up to 2.5 metres, in any of the five colours, with an instant price.
Which planters can have castors?
All of them except the Corner and the Round. The castors are galvanised steel with hard nylon wheels and are fitted before delivery.
How much is delivery, and how long does it take?
Delivery is free to the UK mainland (excluding the Highlands and offshore islands). Planters are dispatched in 2–3 days. Under 1.2m they come by tracked courier; longer planters are delivered by our 2-man team and placed where you want them.
Do you make planters for businesses?
Yes: pubs, cafés, hotels, offices and public spaces, from a single trough to a full run. See commercial planters or get in touch.
