The brief
TfL needed planters for two of the most photographed spots in London that would look like planters and work like barriers: heavy enough, once filled with sand, to stop a vehicle, and good-looking enough to sit outside St Paul's. They also needed them fast.
What we made
Pyramid-topped planter units in rows, built from thick sustainably sourced timber with a water-based dye and heavy-duty varnish so they'd stand up to traffic fumes, weather and a few million passers-by. Each unit is lined and drained like any of our planters, but built to be filled with sand before the plants go in.
Delivery and installation
Everything was made in Derbyshire and taken down in one load on an articulated lorry. We installed out of hours with TfL and the City of London's teams, so the pavements were clear by the morning rush. Years on, both schemes are still in daily use.
