A console table in 30mm solid American black walnut, 20cm deep, on two hand-forged steel legs. Solid means solid: the same timber runs right through the board, so an edge, a chip or a re-sand shows walnut and not a substrate. A good deal of what is sold as solid walnut or solid oak at this price is a hardwood frame with veneered panels — worth checking the specification wherever you are comparing.

Two legs rather than four, set at an angle and fixed toward the centre of the span, so the floor stays clear at either end and the table reads as a shelf rather than a piece of furniture. The steel is hand-forged in the UK and finished to match.

The walnut is finished in satin oil, which sits in the timber rather than on top of it — it darkens the chocolate and purple tones in the grain and can be refreshed at home with a cloth and a little more oil.
